Inspiration can strike at any time. Conversely, it can disappear at any moment and leave writers in despair. But where does inspiration come from? I expect that there are many answers to this question but, until yesterday, I would not have suggested that loud noises were amongst them! However, watching this A380 taking-off yesterday at Frankfurt Airport, I wondered why the roar of the engines moved me. And then, I thought of the Abba lyrics: "We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die, and I'm not ashamed to say, the roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry."
For some people, including me, the sound of a roaring engine can elicit a thrilling and exciting emotional response and this can trigger creativity. That does not mean that I must go to Frankfurt airport for creative injections! A little internet research suggests that music has a powerful effect on the brain, and many studies have shown that listening to music can boost creativity and productivity. Apparently, listening to music can help stimulate the brain’s right hemisphere, which is responsible for creativity and imagination. For me, in barren creative times, I would now include jet engines, along with a Mahler or Bruckner symphony to help trigger new ideas and associations and provide inspiration and motivation. Try it yourself and see what works for you!
