Herrenberg is the gateway to The Schoenbuch Forest. The author lived here between 1996 and 2000. He began work on the novel in 2001 but the thoughts behind the book had been churning away for some time before that. There is also no question that a sort of homesickness for Herrenberg played a part in the inspiration for the book.
In July 2017, the author went back to Herrenberg to visit old friends and could not resist revisiting the "old friends" that inspired the book.
The first photo below shows the view from the church tower and the market place below. It was in the church tower that the protagonist, Martin Slater, first met the old soldier, Ulrich Schneider.� Scheider also appears in the bell tower (second photo below).
