Do you recognise these song lyrics? I have changed them slightly by writing in “normal” prose but you might recognise them nonetheless.
I must have opened my front door at eight o'clock or so after stopping along the way to buy some Chinese fast food. I am sure I had my dinner watching something on TV. After all, there is not a single episode of Dallas I have not seen. I must have gone to bed around a quarter past ten. I need a lot of sleep, and so I like to be in bed by then. I must have read a while – perhaps the latest novel by Marilyn French or something similar in style. It is funny, but I had no sense of living without aim the day before you came. Turning out the light, I must have yawned and cuddled up for yet another night, and I must have heard rain on the roof - the day before you came.
We know nothing about this person but what is as clear as daylight is that her life has been turned upside down. She has fallen madly in love. We don’t know anything else. We don’t need to know anything else. It is a wonderful example of show don’t tell.
