It's northern France 1944. Two US soldiers discover that both come from Chicago and promise that should one of them die, the other would drop in on the dead man's family. Before they can make it to the nearest foxhole to exchange names and addresses, one of the men is mortally wounded. The surviving soldier desperately wants to honour his promise but can only remember the dead man's nickname "Chicago," and in the heat of battle there is no opportunity to find out. The war ends and, as time goes by, the surviving soldier's broken promise haunts him.
